Love in the age of COVID-19

Since the global pandemic began, many couples have been asking themselves, “how the heck am I gonna get married this year?!” There’s no set timeline to how long a pandemic lasts, and unsurprisingly, the uncertainty has caused a LOT of stress for spouses-to-be. And we all know how stressful wedding planning already is!

Very rarely have couples decided to outright cancel their wedding plans. Instead, some have postponed their wedding to the fall or to next year, while others have opt to hold simple, intimate ceremonies. This decision to “downsize” their wedding has even attracted media attention, and it makes a lot of sense:

  • A downsized wedding of just 5-10 participants won’t break any laws on social gatherings and can be held literally anywhere.

  • It significantly reduces costs—considering that an average wedding in Canada costs $42,000, having a wedding for just $149 with an N95 Nuptials officiant means that you can save your money, especially during this time of economic uncertainty.

  • You can schedule one for a date that suits you best—weddings are typically held on weekends to accommodate the availability of your multitude of guests. Having a small wedding with just a handful of participants is far easier to schedule.

  • We live in the 21st century! Online videoconferencing options like Zoom have made it SO easy to connect with your friends and family anywhere in the world. Why not simply livestream your wedding so that your beloved grandma can watch her favourite grandchild get married from the comfort of her home?

We’ve been really heartened to see the media picking up on the creative ways that couples have managed to tie the knot during these unprecedented times. Has it all been roses? Absolutely not. But Canadians are resilient and eager to support one another. Here are a handful of feel-good stories to brighten your day:

And just today, Ottawa Magazine posted an inside look of a “magical, raw” pandemic wedding that’s one definitely of our favourite stories to date.

We don’t know what the pandemic will be like next month, or next week, or even tomorrow. But, as we’ve seen from coast-to-coast and around the world, there are many couples determined not to let anything stand in their way of tying the knot.
